Healthcare Certifications Worth Considering

By MedXL Editorial Team · Updated 2026-08-26 · 6 min read

Healthcare runs on credentials, and beyond the licence itself sits a sprawling market of certifications: some effectively mandatory, some genuinely career-changing, and some expensive wall decoration. The skill is telling them apart for your role, your region, and your goals. This guide maps the certification landscape in the United States and Canada and gives you a framework for deciding what is worth your time and money.

A licence is legal permission to practise, granted by a state board or provincial regulator. A certification is a credential from a professional body attesting to knowledge or competence in a domain. Certification does not replace licensure, and with a few role-specific exceptions it is voluntary — its value comes from what employers, regulators, and the market attach to it.

That value varies by jurisdiction and employer more than marketing materials admit. Before pursuing anything, do three checks: whether employers in your target market list it in postings (search real listings, including on MedXL's job search, and count); whether your regulator or professional association recognizes it; and whether people currently in your target role say it mattered. Those three answers beat any brochure.
